Mayor sacked for promoting Kurdish

Radio Netherlands – By Jamie van Wagtendonk

Former mayor Abdullah Demirbas made a pledge to his voters when he was elected
in the large eastern Turkey city of Diyarbakir. He promised to make
government more accessible to the people, primarily by offering services in
more than one language.

“When I was elected, I ordered a survey of the people. The overwhelming
majority asked for services in their mother tongue.”

Most people in the city of 565,000 people are Kurdish, including Mr Demirbas,
so he began working primarily in the Kurdish language. This decision led to
his removal from office and Demirbas has had multiple lawsuits filed against
him by the Turkish state.
